Copper Beech
Students take Third Place
at World Finals
A team of seven students from
Copper Beech Elementary, in Glenside, has earned third place in the
Odyssey of the Mind World Finals held at the University of
Maryland in College Park, May 31st - June 3rd.
The students earned the right
to compete in this event by placing second place in their
division during the state competition held at Altoona Area High
School on April 12th.
Odyssey of the Mind is a
creative problem solving competition for students in
kindergarten through high school.
Teams are judged in three
areas: the long term problem, where teams prepare solutions and
bring them to the competition; style or the enhancement of the
long-term solution; and the spontaneous problem given to the
team on the day of the competition.
The students from Copper Beech
Elementary presented their problem to The Eccentrics,
a challenge that requires them to create and present a humorous
performance about three eccentric characters that are faced with
a problem in the Earth’s cryosphere. The eccentric characters,
who seem to be misfits, fix the cracks in the Antarctic, and
save the world.
At the World Finals, the
Copper Beech Elementary students were matched against other
qualifiers from throughout North America as well as Australia,
Africa, Asia, and Europe.
