In November 1999, Highland Elementary School developed and
adopted the STARS (Striving Toward A Responsible
School) Program to teach, reinforce, and practice the attributes necessary
for promoting a positive school climate. The mission of this program is very
similar to Abington School District’s adopted Character Education Program;
however, Highland has decided to keep the STARS name and certain aspects of our
STARS program to promote continuity of programming from last year.
Each month, a specific "character trait" is introduced in
every Abington elementary school. A menu of classroom-based activities and
resources pertaining to the trait are provided to the elementary staff to offer
suggestions on how to facilitate the acquisition of the attribute.
The monthly themes for the 2009-2010
academic year are:
September Citizenship
October Responsibility
November Cooperation
December Tolerance
January Compassion
February Courage
March Respect
April Honesty
May Perseverance
Highland’s STARS Program provides an extension of the
district’s Character Education Program in the following ways:
- Periodic announcements, morning quotes, and school-based contests based
on the "character trait" of the month.
- Awarding of the STARS trophy (optional)
Students from each class can select one person from
their class who best exemplifies the attribute of the month via a weekly
class vote.
- Certificates recognizing the STARS trophy recipient’s accomplishment
(optional)
- Books pertaining to each monthly theme are located in a specific area of
the library
As an integral part of your child’s educational program,
parents are encouraged to discuss and review the character traits in partnership
with the school.
