Membership in
the National Junior Honor Society is an honor available to those students
who have excelled in the areas of scholarship, citizenship, character,
leadership and service. The scholarship requirement is met by achieving a
3.5 cumulative grade point average during the 7th and/or the 8th grade year.
Students who have attained a GPA of 3.5 or greater are then evaluated in the
other areas, including Abington based
extra-curricular activities (Click link for activities points) and
faculty committee appointed by the principal.
Applications
are sent home to eligible students in early September and must be returned
by the assigned deadline. Students will be notified via mail of selection
results.
The National
Junior Honor Society holds monthly meetings. Aside from discussing upcoming
activities and events, these meetings provide a forum for members to meet
speakers from a wide variety of backgrounds. In the past, speakers have
included an F.B.I agent, television news personalities, and local business
leaders.
The National
Junior Honor Society conducts numerous service activities throughout the
school year. Last year we collected toys for the Toys for Tots program,
assisted Brady’s Smile organization to create over 60 blankets for children
in neo-natal hospital units, and donated money for a scholarship for a
student at Abington Senior High School. Each year we offer tutoring
services during and after school for Abington Junior High School students,
provide tours and orientation programs for new students and incoming 6th
grade classes, assist with the Back to School Night each fall, and create
picture books for kindergarten students at Overlook elementary.
