Bus safety continues to be an
important concern of the Abington School District. Students and parents are
reminded that their cooperation is needed to continue our efforts for a safe
and efficient transportation program.
To this end, it is expected
that reasonable behavior will be observed during the time students are riding
school buses. Infractions which jeopardize the safety of the bus and of the
other students will not be permitted. It is the duty of the bus driver to
report to the administrator on bus duty any instances of student misbehavior on
the buses. From this point, the information will be reviewed for further disciplinary
action.
There are times when students
engage in behavior that constitutes a danger to themselves and others. In those
instances, the administrative staff is prepared to revoke transportation
privileges for a period of one to ten days. Revocation of transportation for
more than ten days will be recommended by the Office of the Superintendent at
an appropriate hearing before the Board of School Directors.
The school district recently
installed video surveillance equipment on some buses to assist drivers in
monitoring behavior. When appropriate, the district will use video material in
the disciplinary cases arising from unacceptable bus behavior. In the event a
student is denied transportation privileges, transportation to and from school
is the responsibility of the parent and/or guardian.
The following behaviors are
considered infractions of basic bus rules:
- Fighting
- Committing vandalism or willful destruction to the
buses
- Carrying weapons
- Using drugs or alcohol
- Smoking
- Using profanity or giving verbal abuse
- Standing; pushing; putting arms, head, or legs out
windows
- Eating, spitting
- Shooting water pistols
- Throwing objects, snowballing
- Making excessive noise
- Bringing pets on the bus
- Riding an unassigned bus
- Failure to produce I.D. cards
- Running after or hanging on bus
- Interfering with safe and orderly operation of bus or
jeopardizing health and safety of passengers
- Committing other infractions of Board Policy and
Pennsylvania Department of Transportation regulations.
