Days of Service

Abington Senior High sponsors several days of service, including one school day for each grade level to facilitate the completion of the requirement. On these days, students should not report to the Senior High School, but to their volunteer placement in the community. The days of service are as follows:
  1. Senior Give-Back Day (October): seniors must complete a minimum of 5 hours of service-learning activities on this school day in the community (this will be applied to your Service Learning Project)
  2. Service Learning Day (May): juniors and sophomores must complete a minimum of five consecutive hours of service-learning on this school day in the community. These hours will count toward your Service Learning Project.
Other, optional, days when service projects take place are:
  1. Martin Luther King Day of Service (January- also a school holiday)
  2. National Youth Service Day (a Saturday in April).
Many more opportunities can be found in the service-learning office (S-100) and by referencing the monthly publication the Service Station.

Sign-Up / Show-Up Policy

When you sign up to participate in a service project, your signature is a guarantee of your attendance. If you will not be able to attend a project for which you signed up, you must notify them immediately. If a student fails to show up for a commitment for which they have signed up, their social studies teacher will be notified and their serviceR11;learning grade will be adversely affected. Many projects require a completed permission slip in order to participate. Students should note when a project requires a permission form that only a completed permission slip will reserve their spot.

Summer Hours

Hours accumulated over the summer may count towards a student's 15-20 hour requirement, however, the student must still participate in either Senior Give Back Day or Service Learning Day, as these are school days that are held in the community. Students must record and fully document their involvement in any summer activity. All summer hours count toward the President's Volunteer Service Award and the Congressional Award, as well as the Abington Service Learning Project. Summer hours may also be used towards a student's culminating project. Note: The Service Calendar is June 1 - May 31, every year. Service award forms are due by May 1st (estimate May hours).

Awards and Recognition

A student's commitment to service learning does not go unnoticed. Students have the opportunity to 'earn several local and national awards - the Abington Student Service Award, the President's Volunteer Service Award, and the Congressional Award.
