Welcome Back - 2011 - 2012

August 26, 2011

Dear Willow Hill Parents:

Welcome back! Summer vacations provide time for rest and relaxation. I hope you are rejuvenated and ready for the start of another successful year at Willow Hill Elementary School.

As I prepare for my fourth year as principal of the most dynamic and culturally diverse elementary school in the Abington School District, I am proud to announce that Willow Hill has made AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress) as outlined by the PA Department of Education and the No Child Left Behind Act for an astounding tenth consecutive year. The percent of students proficient or advanced in the areas of reading, mathematics, and writing on the 2011 PSSA exams represent record high percentages for Willow Hill students. More specifically, the mathematics scores increased by 6%, the reading scores increased by 17% and the writing scores increased by 22%. Meeting AYP benchmarks and targets for ten consecutive years clearly confirms that we continue to progress and are headed in the right direction. However, we must not become complacent, but rather use these results as motivation to make greater progress this year for there is a great deal of work to be accomplished. Our vision remains the same – to facilitate a challenging, standards-based educational system wherein all students who enter our learning environment leave having acquired the skills and knowledge necessary to complete proficient or advanced work on grade level and continue their academic path. Your ongoing commitment and engagement, coupled with the efforts of our outstanding students and exceptional staff members, will transform our vision into reality.

Enclosed are pertinent documents which include your child’s class assignment. The staff worked extremely hard to equitably balance the classes to afford everyone the opportunity to learn in an engaging, stimulating, and nurturing environment. The 2011-2012 Willow Hill Elementary School Handbook is posted on the homepage of our website. All students will receive a copy no later than Friday, September 9. Please take the time to review this handbook with your child. It provides very specific information with regard to school policies and daily procedures. I ask that you and your child sign and return the final page of the handbook to his/her classroom teacher no later than Friday, September 16, 2011.

In conclusion, you are reminded that the first student day is Wednesday, September 7, 2011. Children may begin arriving at 8:30 a.m. To ensure the safety of your children and our students, you are reminded that parking is not allowed along the drop off circle parallel to the primary playground. All classroom teachers will be positioned on the black top with a sign indicating their name and grade level assignment. Bus transportation schedules are posted on the Abington School District Website. For additional bus transportation information, please contact the Transportation Department at 215.884.4700 Ext. 2624.

Sincerely,

Damon R. Jordan
Principal
