School District Pupil Services Department
During
this school year, the district will implement in each of the
schools a Character Education program which will focus on
a theme of the month. These topics are
chosen from a list of developmental assets that are crucial
to the social development of children.
The newsletter, written by a committee
of staff members, will alert you to the theme of the
month, provide information about the
theme and offer suggested activities. In each of the schools,
announcements will be made related to
the topic and teachers will be integrating
information related to the topic into their instruction.
Each school has unique programs and
activities and some of these will be highlighted each month on
the reverse side of the newsletter
under the heading Student Support Services.

January 2010 - Compassion 04
This month, our school community will stress the importance
of compassion. Compassion is the act of understanding the
experience of others and feeling care and kindness for them.
We will focus on encouraging compassion at school by
highlighting the positive effects that hav-ing compassion
instills in our classrooms, neighbor-hoods, and elsewhere
throughout the world. All of us can exercise compassion by:
- Caring about how others feel
- Doing kind and thoughtful things for people in need
- Putting other people’s needs before our own.

Although you cannot "teach" compassion like a
step-by-step math lesson, you can instill it in
your children.

tolerance education is to deal with the concept of
equality and fairness. We need to establish
