Did you know? Abington Senior High School added a Drone Club earlier this school year, following a new policy from the Board of School Directors regarding the use and operation of the equipment on school property. One of the first flights of the drone in early March at ASHS included a flyover of the Additions and Renovations to Abington Senior High School, showcasing the classroom addition and construction of the administrative wing. Watch below.

Due to Governor Wolf’s March 19th order to close all non-life-sustaining businesses in Pennsylvania as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, the Abington Senior High School Additions and Renovations Project was unfortunately placed on hold until further notice. We will provide additional updates on the impact of this order on our project timeline as they become available.
Prior to the suspension of construction, at the March 10, 2020, meeting of the Board of School Directors of the Abington School District, Mr. Alfred Howard, Director of Facilities, and Mr. Damian Spahr, of SiteLogIQ–formerly Reynolds–provided an orientation on the Abington Senior High School Additions and Renovations Project, including information regarding phasing schedules for the project. Mr. Spahr shared that the Stephen A. Schwarzman Center for Science and Technology was 65 percent complete as of the date of the meeting, while the new auxiliary gymnasium was 25 percent complete.
We look forward to the construction team getting to pick up where they left off once it is safe for operations to resume.
As we approach the opening of the expanded administrative areas at Abington Senior High School, construction on a different area of the building began shortly before the holiday season: the construction of the expanded athletic wing. In addition to crews building onto the current gymnasium, new spaces will also be constructed below the existing gym and pool areas in order to include an auxiliary gymnasium and a brand new weight room. This means that like Abington Junior High School, which has smaller gymnasia in addition to the main gym, Abington Senior High School will have added options that are designed to hold other indoor sporting events like volleyball. This will allow for multiple events to be scheduled at the same time, which will benefit our athletic teams and the broader community who use our facilities. As construction on this area continues through the spring and summer, expect the road between the gymnasia and stadium to remain closed for scaffolding and other equipment.
Below you will find photos of the foundation and footings of the auxiliary gymnasium.
Moving over to the other side of the building, new windows have been installed in the administrative wing, adjacent to the auditorium lobby, and brick that matches the original Senior High building has been added to the facade. Stay tuned for interior photos from the main hallway across from the library, which will be coming soon.
Dear Abington School District Community,
I write to provide an update regarding the altered traffic patterns along a portion of the Senior High campus which were implemented due to expansion and renovation of the athletic wing. As I notified you in November, closure of the roadway between Schwarzman Stadium and the gymnasium was necessary between the hours of 6:30 AM and 2:30 PM, Mondays through Fridays, with the roadway opened to one-way traffic going uphill (in the direction toward Abington Junior High School) at all other days and times.
In order to allow the construction team to erect scaffolding and move both equipment and materials to the site for the next phase of construction of the new auxiliary gymnasium, it is now necessary to adjust the roadway closure. Beginning Wednesday, January 22, until further notice, the roadway will be closed to all traffic at all times.
We ask that you allow extra time to navigate the campus and/or plan alternate routes accordingly due to this roadway closure, which will remain during weekends as well. Throughout the remainder of the school year, as construction continues, we will communicate any changes as needed.
Please contact Abington Senior High School Principal, Mr. Angelo Berrios, with any questions, and subscribe to our ASHS Additions & Renovations Blog if you would like to be notified of any news or updates related to the construction.
Thank you for your patience and understanding as the Additions and Renovations project continues toward an end result that will benefit every student in the Abington School District.
