Dear Abington School District Community,

We are pleased and excited that the Additions and Renovations to Abington Senior High School project is moving along nicely.  I write to share important logistical information that will impact traffic around Abington Senior High School.  As was presented via an orientation at the     October 15, 2019, meeting of the Abington School District Board of School Directors, upcoming construction as part of the Abington Senior High School Additions and Renovations project will alter traffic patterns along a portion of the Senior High campus due to the expansion and renovation of the athletic wing.  Mainly, it will require the closure of the road that lies between the stadium and gymnasium, between the hours of 6:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., Mondays through Fridays.  At all other days and times, the road will be open to one-way traffic going uphill (in the direction toward Abington Junior High School).

Click here for a map delineating the traffic patterns and closure times for vehicles.  It is important to note that for safety reasons, this route will be closed to pedestrian traffic at all times.  We are working with the Abington School District Transportation Department to adjust bus routes, as needed.  As this closure will also impact routes for students who walk to the secondary schools’ campus, a separate communication from the Transportation Department will be sent to those individuals outlining alternative plans.  Parent pick-up/drop-off locations will remain unchanged.

Please know that we are working with Abington Township officials to ensure all necessary stakeholders are aware of these changes, including emergency personnel.

These changes will be implemented starting, Wednesday, November 6, 2019, and will remain in effect until the completion of the gymnasium expansion, anticipated for the summer of 2020.  Throughout the remainder of the school year, we will continue to communicate any changes as needed, and ask that you allow extra time to navigate campus and/or plan alternate routes accordingly.

As always, please contact Abington Senior High School Principal, Mr. Angelo Berrios, with any questions, and subscribe to our ASHS Additions & Renovations Blog if you would like to be notified of any news or updates related to the construction.

We thank you for your continued patience and understanding throughout the Additions and Renovations project.  The end result will be a reimagined Abington Senior High School, which will benefit every student in the Abington School District.

Last week, Director of Facilities Mr. Thomas Schneider and Abington Senior High School Principal Mr. Angelo Berrios provided an update to Senior High parents/guardians regarding the Additions and Renovations to Abington Senior High School. The presentation, which is available here, provided information on recently completed work as well as next steps and timing.

With the 2019 summer renovations now complete, and the new wing and expanded administrative and guidance areas continuing as planned, work began last week on the expansion of the gymnasium area. This involves the construction of an auxiliary gymnasium, which will serve as a space for indoor sports like volleyball and wrestling, in addition to being a resource during the school day for physical education classes. Underneath the new gymnasium will be new locker rooms, a weight room and a fitness center.

The construction of this area will require reworked traffic patterns along the road that lies between the stadium and gymnasium. The changes will include the closure of the road between the hours of 6:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., Mondays through Fridays, with it being opened to one-way traffic going uphill all other days and times.

These new traffic patterns will not be implemented until the November timeframe––after the Oct. 26 Bands in the Boneyard event and the conclusion of football season––and will continue until the completion of the auxiliary gymnasium portion, which is scheduled for the summer of 2020.

As November nears, more information will be forthcoming––including roadway maps––via parent/guardian and community communications.

As a follow-up to a letter that was sent to parents/guardians of students in grades 10-12 via Skyward Message Center from Abington Senior High School Principal Mr. Angelo Berrios, there will be a construction update meeting for parents/guardians of Senior High students on Thursday, September 19 at 6:30 p.m., to discuss progress of the Abington Senior High School Additions and Renovations project, student safety concerning the project, and plans/timelines. Led by Mr. Angelo Berrios and Director of Facilities Mr. Thomas Schneider, the meeting will be held in the Auditorium and will occur directly before the All-School Parent Night at 7 p.m.

The parent/guardian letter that was sent via Skyward prior to the start of school also provided information on the building and grounds of the Senior High, specifically pertaining to parking, arrival and dismissal procedures. This information, as well as a corresponding map, are available for parents/guardians and students here.

The last slideshow posted to the ASHS Additions & Renovations Blog brought a preview of the near-complete renovations performed over the summer of 2019 at Abington Senior High School, and we were very excited to put on the finishing touches in preparation for students and staff to return for the 2019-2020 school year on Tuesday, September 3. Check out the Senior High’s new look for back-to-school in the below photos.

Shown here are the hallway and a classroom of the Interdisciplinary Wing:

Additionally, the first photo below shows what the library looked like as students wrapped up finals in June last school year, and in comparison, the proceeding photos show what it looks like now that renovations are complete:
